Grampa, his daughter Mariette and granddaughter Cindy lead quiet lives in a small French town. During a summer vacation they are visited by thirty-year-old Gilles who shares an unusual friendship with Grampa. Their peaceful bliss is interrupted when the chief of police gets involved in the story. Now the night begins.Alain Guiraudie’s work can be described as a fight for a peaceful coexistence with others and with yourself. His absurd, comically confusing, and provocative story reveals a longing for emotional intimacy and human connection that the protagonist Gilles unexpectedly finds with Grampa. 

In his productions Vladislavs Nastavševs challenges the cult of normalcy and explores the hidden boundaries that keep our society from accepting that which is different. Together with a bright cast of young actors – Anta Aizupe, Kaspars Dumburs, Marija Linarte, Āris Matesovičs, Inese Pudža and Igors Šelegovskis, the director invites the audience to delve into the darkest and deepest depths of the soul, re-evaluating the conventional preconceptions about love, sexuality, lust and violence

Alain Guiraudie is a renowned film director and “Now the Night begins” is his literary debut. The novel has received France's prestigious Prix Sade with critics characterising it as the essence of Guiraudie’s filmography.
