State Department radiotelegraphist Juris Gulēns, a strapping young man with the ardent zeal of love in his heart, works at the Lonely Island post. He must spend a month with no other person, not a beast in sight, all around him only water and cliffs, but at least the pay is double. And in the moments when eternal longing and crazy notions overtake him and must be drowned in the salty sea, the soft voice of Zenta always accompanies him. Upon return from his second shift Juris rushes to propose to his beloved, but is greeted by an unpleasant surprise, revealed to him by a red plush armchair. His lips start to fume, his brain starts to wobble and a terrible scream gathers in his throat.

“The Chair” explores the protagonist’s experience living in prolonged isolation from the outside world and undergoing deformations of his consciousness imperceptible to himself. Inspired by the colourful and poetic language of Aleksandrs Čaks, the creative team uses object theatre and movie sound effect recording techniques to bring the spectator into the subjective world of Juris Gulēns where fantasy, dreams and reality are closely intertwined.
